OzGreen/CuriousWorks Digital Media Workshop – Notes for Day 1

Today we started off our workshop with some brief introductions to and from the CuriousWorks team and OzGREEN. We then did some assessments of our local skills and resources. These then fed in to the afternoon where we played a ‘project development’ game. In the game, each region that was represented at the workshop teamed up to develop projects that they could use in their community.

This game was based off of the ‘communications and engagement’ version of David Wilcox work.  You can download a Game Packet of the cards and supplementary material we used here.

The lay out of the game (the version we played at least) is basically as such:

Playing the Communications and Engagement Game

Objective

Develop an actionable project that utilizes people and technology all within a budget.

Tools

  • 4 square matrix that plots Project Description, Engagement, Technology and Funding (one for each team – they can draw these during the session)
  • a set of cards that outline approaches, technology tools, and people tools/process for implementing their projects
  • sticky notes for creating their own cards (facilitators will need to vet these and assign point values to them)

Process

  1. People break into groups of 2-5 (depending on the make up of the workshop)
  2. They are given cards with points on them and only have 10 points to spend (so they can’t use all the tools – they’ve got limited resources to work with)
  3. They have a certain amount of time (in our case 45 minutes) to develop a project
  4. At the end of the time, people present their projects

Here’s some pictures from our process.

Step 1: Brainstorming

Step 2: Collaborative Project Development

Step 3: Presenting the Results for Feedback

What went well

  • It was fun, engaging and great projects were created

What could have gone better

  • The card set used could have focused a bit more on digital media-oriented projects
  • Would have been nice to integrate their projects a bit more in the following days

Did I miss anything?
